Hegemony and Democracy Essay on the PT on its thirtieth anniversary

Abstract

The mass of industrial workers who had been indifferent until that particular moment, if not even unaware of the armed struggle against the dictatorship that had just taken place; economically affected by the energy crisis which, in turn, had led to a monetary tightening (increase in interest), at the center of the capitalist system and which had as a consequence the increase in the external debt with which the military dictatorship had sustained economic development until then – a factor buffer of any kind of social discontent - caused the respective currency devaluation, inflationary surge and social discontent, taking to the streets thousands of workers who would start the political movement destined to put an end to the military dictatorship.
From this movement emerged the Workers' Party, which had its trajectory inscribed in this redemocratization model, limited to the electoral game. As a left-wing party and representative of a working class that had appeared as a political subject with concrete and effective existence only very recently; Since its birth, the PT had been cut off from the alternatives of the class struggle that proved to be efficient and effective – even in our Latin America (as the Cuban example shows) – in overcoming Capitalism.
