Abstract

The 19th century was the period in which the Mexican nation was formed and, along with the Revolution of 1910, it carved into its history the main lines of its later development. The peasant armies of Fathers Hidalgo and Morelos, even though they were defeated in the popular independence revolution that began in 1810, remained in the national memory and, mainly, as a substrate of the peasant struggle for land. As a counterpoint, the fear of indigenous peasant rebellion galvanized conservative forces against the majorities of the new country. The legacy of this popular struggle would mark the main social conflicts of the following century, such as the 1910 revolution.
