Paulo Freire and the Cold War
Abstract
Paulo Freire and the Cold War Politics of Literacy, by American historian Andrew J. Kirkendall, was published in 2010 by the University of North Carolina Press. Result of a 7-year research, the author went through archives of six countries (Brazil, Chile, Nicaragua, France, United States and Switzerland), reconstructing the trajectory of Paulo Freire in each political context where he passed, between 1960 until his death , in 1997. It is not exactly a biographical work. As indicated in the title, the aim of the work was to analyze the links between literacy policies and the Cold War, documenting how Paulo Freire's pedagogical practices were accepted, encouraged, instrumentalized or rejected in different situations, interacting with various socio-ideological terrains.
