Abstract

In 1963 my friend Antônio Candido went to Botucatu, where my family and I had lived since March 1960. His stay, which lasted a few days, led to a turnaround in the field of my intellectual work.
Since the first years of reading, I have always selected books and themes of my momentary interest. Like many others, I went through the comic book phase, recently imported from the United States, such as Gibi magazine - with the heroes Flash Gordon, Jim das Selvas and X9, all authored by Alex Raymond; Tarzan, Brick Braford etc; then by the detective novels of the Yellow Collection - with Edgard Wallace, Sax Rohmer, Agatha Christie etc; and adventure hair, such as Julio Verne, in addition to the Terramarear Collection - Tarzan, Robert Louis Stevenson, Emílio Salgari, Jack London, etc.; and the Paratodos Collection - Edgard Wallace, Baroneza D’Orcy, P.C. Wren. Perhaps, as an exception in my generation, I stopped being a reader of two important currents of literature at the time: the books by Monteiro Lobato and the German one, with folkloric content, edited by Companhia Melhoramentos.
