Some Reflections on the Places of Memory of the São Paulo Workers' Movement

Abstract

The article deals with the places of memory of the labor movement in the city of São Paulo. During the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the city of São Paulo underwent a great urban growth and a strong expansion of its industrial park. São Paulo city working class organized a powerful associative movement, which took root in the industrial districts, building networks of solidarity. More than a century later, the memory of the places of organization and mobilization of the workers’ movement was erased, causing a fundamental part of the city’s history to remain forgotten.

Author Biography

Frederico Duarte Bartz, UFRGS

Frederico Duarte Bartz holds the following degrees from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul: a Bachelor of Arts in History (2003), a Bachelor of Arts in Art History (2016), a Master of Arts in History (2008), and a Ph.D. in History (2014). He is currently an Educational Affairs Technician at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. He has experience in the field of history, with an emphasis on the history of the labor movement in Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil. His research topics include labor journalism, the production of illustrations by labor newspapers, and the study of the locations, memory, and heritage of working-class organizations in urban spaces.
